DMDS Shows and Concerts

DMDS put on at least one stage production a year, usually a musical in the spring, but also take many other opportunities to perform - whether it is a concert, the New Ross Choral Competition or a charity fundraiser. Take a look at some of our latest updates below, or see the list of our past shows to leap directly to stories and articles about that production.

The Drowsy Chaperone

DMDS will present the Drowsy Chaperone at the Pavilion Theatre from Tuesday 17th to Saturday 21st April  2012. It will be the Dublin premiere of a hilarious, heart-warming love-story described as a ‘musical within a comedy’.

50th Birthday Concert

DMDS will this year celebrate its 50th year of performance.  You can see our full history here. To celebrate, we will run a Birthday Celebration Concert on November 26 and 27th in the Pavilion Theatre and hope that we can re-unite all those who have been involved with DMDS over the years. Full details will be posted here as they become available.

AIMS Awards 2010

Our show for 2010 was The Pirates of Penzance, which received 2 AIMS nominations. Jen McGann won the award for Best comedienne for her portrayal of Ruth, and we also received a nomination for Best Gilbert & Sullivan Show. These awards are competed for by 130 societies, involving about 14,000 people, and are highly prized. DMDS have previously won awards at the AIMS event for best Comedienne (2009 - see below), Best Choreography (2008), best Musical Director (2007) and have been nominated on many occasions.

AIMS Choral Festival 2010 - Best Choir 5 years in a Row !

At the AIMS Choral Festival Competition in New Ross we won the award for best Musical Society choir in Ireland for the 5th successive year. The award, the Frank Cullinane Trophy, was presented by the Assoc of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) at the competition in New Ross in May. The DMDS choir was directed by Des Cox, accompanied on piano by his brother Neville Cox, and performed 'Circle of Life' and 'Tonight'. The win was a record 5 in-a-row for any society.

Our 2010 Show was 'The Pirates of Penzance'

Our show in 2010 was the classic "The Pirates of Penzance". A huge cast of local and national singing talent presented this classic comic romance whose appeal is still undiminished 130 years after its initial showing. DMDS transported their audience to the magical world of Gilbert & Sullivan in which swash-buckling pirates, flat footed policemen, a bevy of blushing maidens and a model Major General provided the back-drop to the love-story of Frederick and Mabel.

Prospective Pirates Please Apply!

In preparation for a busy anniversary season and our production of 'Pirates of Penzance' DMDS is now taking applications from anyone interested in joining the society (especially if they are male!).

Although DMDS already has a good membership of men, this musical requires a large male cast, and we therefore hope to encourage additional male singers.

AIMS Choral Festival 2009

At the AIMS Choral Festival Competition in New Ross (May 2009) DMDS once again won the Frank Cullinane Trophy for best Choral Society choir (for the 4th Successive year) and also the Ballyclare Rosebowl for best Cameo performance (for the 4th successive year).
